I’ve been writing since elementary school, when we were given that yellow parchment paper with the giant lines with the dots in the middle, to encourage perfect lettering. I wrote a story that combined Bilbo’s house in Hobbiton, a room full of bikes, and the joke with the big red button where you’re not supposed to push it no matter what … which it turns out releases a gorilla who tags you—”tag! you’re it!” (Sorry if you haven’t heard that one. I was very disappointed with that punchline.)
Shakespeare once said that the pen is mightier than the sword. There’s never been a truth more perfectly phrased.
